World Diabetes Day

Diabetes occurs when your body is unable to break down glucose into energy. This is because there is either not enough of the hormone insulin (produced by the pancreas) to break down the glucose, or the insulin produced does not work properly. Diabetes is a non-communicable disease but can be hereditary and can lead to other medical complications if not well managed.

In 2017, statistics from the World Health Organsation indicates that about 8.8 per cent of the global population had diabetes. That is over 450 million people diagnosed with the disease. Unfortunately, the figure is projected to rise to 9.9 per cent by 2045 making diabetes one of the fastest growing chronic non-communicable diseases in the world.

Diabetes has remained one of the leading causes of kidney failure. It also doubles the risk for heart attack or stroke and there is no cure for it. For those already diagnosed with diabetes, it can be treated with insulin, dietary changes, and exercise.

Ask yourself do you feel tired, hungry and excessively thirsty all the time? Do you experience blurred vision or a tingling in the feet? Have you lost weight, frequently visited the toilet to urinate? For those yet to have the disease; here are some things you to do to prevent it.

1. Know your blood level – Having knowledge of your blood level is very important. In fact, this is the first step to take in preventing or treatment of diabetes. This can be done through professional help by doctors or other certified medical personnel. The test for this is called fasting blood or fasting blood glucose. It measures the estimated level of in the blood at a given time or over a period of time.

The test is done in the morning before the person has eaten. The normal range for blood glucose is 70 to 100mg/dl.

2. Eat balanced and healthy diet – Your eating habit is a predisposing factor to having diabetes. There is a to eat balanced and healthy diet especially vegetables, fruits, roughages or food high in fibre, among others.

There is also a to reduce high intake of carbohydrates food as this converts to when digested. Also reduce fat in your diet especially saturated and trans fat like cakes, cookies bread etc. There is a to also reduce intake of salt, and alcoholic drinks. Also avoid or minimise processed foods.

3. Exercise regularly/always be active – Do not live a sedentary lifestyle. You regular exercise. Regular exercise increases the insulin sensitivity of the cells and puts the blood automatically under control.

4. Control your blood pressure – There is a link between blood pressure and diabetes. To reduce the risk of diabetes especially in people with hereditary history of the disease, there is a to constantly monitor your blood pressure. Most times hypertension and diabetes are conjoined twins.

5. Limit alcohol intake – Alcohol has a lot of calories which can make people gain weight and increase their blood level. By avoiding or reducing intake of alcohol, you can reduce diabetes risk.

6. Reduce stress – Stress can cause diabetes. When you are stressed, your body triggers several hormones that can increase your blood level. To cope with stress you can engage in walking, yoga and listening to music, among others.

7. Manage your weight – Manage your weight to prevent being overweight or obese. Excessive weight again is usually associated with diabetes.

8. Quit smoking – Smokers are twice likely to develop diabetes, compared to non-smokers.

9. See your doctor for regular check-up – As you get older, it is advisable to see your physician regularly.

Diabetes is hereditary for me pushed on by some very unhealthy habits. I have managed to keep it under control with medication, diet, exercise, and a dam good caring physician. Do the very best you can on those 9 points so that you don't fall victim to this insidious disease.

Thanks for outlining the warning signs. It is a disease to be very aware of, and avoided if possible. I am borderline diabetic, and it is in my family.

It is an insidious malady that creeps into your life and can really make a mess of things if you don't take control and beat it back. I now watch my BP and keep close tabs on my blood sugar. My diet has changed drastically for thr better and we are both eating much healthier than we did.

We were told that every member of the US military that was 'In country' (Vietnam) has type 2 diabetes as a result of Agent Orange. That was how I got diabetes and also hepatitis.

We also gave diabetes to the Vietnamese and surrounding countries. I went for years before I knew I had it.

The VA does cover all the necessary diabetes supplies for you don't they? As for the Vietnamese they deserve it forcing their Commie crap onto the Free South in nothing more than a Commi land grab.

Excellent & helpful blog to your blog followers. From what you have blogged over time, diet shouldn't be a problem. You post recipes and meals, they seem to be balanced. You certainly aren't sedentary, and you get exercise (don't you have a zip line). Don't know about alcohol, you drink the Dew. You gave up smoking and Hillary lost so there is no stress.

Sometimes I think with all the running I get TOO MUCH exercise. I have not quit smoking though. Next to impossible around here JD and all the guys except My Martin smoke.

The VA does give me most of what I need for diabetes and my personal physician helps with it too. He is easier to get into to see.

Not all Vietnamese were communist and they were affected by agent orange. The south was being overrun by the north. That's why we were there.

We have some South Vietnamese here that escaped the dirty bastards from the North. I think the one old guy was an officer in the SV army. The S Viets get the same honorable treatment as I give to our own Veterans. and I have posted on a couple occasions the deaths of some of their top officers that came here.

South Vietnamese army was called ARVNs, pronounced arvins, which means Army of the Republic of Vietnam. The north, NVA (North Vietnamese Army) and Viet Cong were heavily backed by the Chinese and it was also said to have some Russian influence. That's where the AK47s came from.

I know I have covered at least 2 ARVN's and have a local here that scrubbed the hospital floors to retirement had been an officer that escaped and Iowa sponsored him.
